If you're dealing with vaginal dryness, you're not alone. Today, Dr. Angel Marie Johnson, director of our Women's Health Center in Dedham, discusses one potential treatment: Mona Lisa Touch.
What is Mona Lisa Touch?
DR. JOHNSON: Mona Lisa Touch is a laser technology that's FDA-approved to treat skin conditions. More recently, it's being used off-label to treat vaginal conditions, such as dryness, urinary incontinence, and painful intercourse.
How does Mona Lisa Touch work?
DR. JOHNSON: Your physician will use a small probe equipped with a carbon dioxide laser to gently deliver treatment to the vagina. The laser stimulates the production of collagen, which in turn creates healthier tissue. In essence, the vaginal cells thicken and plump up to produce more moisture. This can result in less discomfort and pain, especially during intercourse.
Does Mona Lisa Touch hurt?
DR. JOHNSON: Mona Lisa Touch is gentle and typically well tolerated. It's important to understand, however, that no procedure is without risk.
How long does the Mona Lisa Touch procedure take?
DR. JOHNSON: The procedure typically takes only five to ten minutes during an office visit. Patients usually can return to normal daily activities after the procedure, although we ask patients to refrain from having sex for 2-3 days.
How many treatments does a patient need to receive?
DR. JOHNSON: The patient receives three treatments six weeks apart.
Does insurance cover Mona Lisa Touch?
DR. JOHNSON: Health insurance doesn't cover Mona Lisa Touch for the treatment of vaginal conditions, so patients must pay out of pocket.
How much does Mona Lisa Touch cost?
DR. JOHNSON: The cost is $950 per treatment for a total cost of $2850 for 3 treatments. After the initial three treatments, long-term management is typically one treatment per year.
I'm interested in Mona Lisa Touch. What should I do next?
DR. JOHNSON: Make an appointment with Dr. Angel Marie Johnson to discuss your symptoms and to determine if Mona Lisa Touch is right for you.
